Any campers out there? My friend and camping buddy is coming for a visit the first week of January. I haven't done much camping in these parts; she lives in the southwest so usually I fly out there and we hike and camp in Utah, New Mexico, etc. I shot my buddy Dave, fellow blogger and camper, an email asking for suggestions, but he's never camped in these parts either so he was no help. I have "50 Hikes in Louisiana" on the way from Amazon but I thought I'd put it out there and see if anyone reading this had some suggestions. I only found minimal info on-line. I'd like it to be a max 3 hour drive from NOLA since we only have 2-3 days. A few ideas I had are: Tunica Hills Wildlife Management Area, Clark Creek Natural Area and Kisatchie Hills Wilderness Area.

We camp sometimes and here are some that I can recommend

Green Acres Campground in St. Francisville 225-635-4903 - this is a good place to get to Tunica Hills, St. Francisville and other sites nearby (like Angola if you're so inclined)

also check out the Louisiana State Parks

we've been to Chicot State Park
http://www.crt.state.la.us/parks/ichicot.aspx

and Lake Fausse Point State Park near Lafayette
http://www.crt.state.la.us/parks/ilakefaus.aspx

both of these have hot showers as well as nice cabins - call for reservations if you want a cabin.

There are also state park campgrounds nearby - on the north shore Fairview, Fountainbleau and down south of New Orleans at Grand Isle. I also hear its nice around Toledo Bend, but that is probably a 5-6 hour haul from here.

If you are a AAA member, they have campbooks that list private campgrounds - we tend to avoid KOA campgrounds cause they are expensive. Look for campgrounds endorsed by Good Sam, those are generally decent places with hot showers and other amenities.

hope this helps...

Thanks swampwoman. I have been to Fountainbleau and hiked a few other trails/areas on the Northshore which are nice and close.
